After we crawled out of our caves, we started rationing the leftover food because we didn't want to exchange any more dollars to reals. Once arrived in the last town in Iran, we emptied our purses buying food and smokes. Sigarettes in Turkmenistan are a true delicacy since the taxes on them are outrageously high. One pack goes for twenty to thirty dollars. In Iran any pack is under a dollar. It's been rumoured that Turkmen border officers like to inspect your valuables thoroughly, and sometimes, forget to put some of those valuables back into your bag. For this reason sigarettes are a great solution.
